'World Cancer Day held at SIUT'

 

KARACHI: World Cancer Day was celebrated at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) Friday. Prof. Adibul Hasan Rizvi, Director SIUT, while inaugurating the World Cancer Day proceedings said that since we started urology treatment, we started treating patients with renal, bladder, prostate and testicular cancers. Since last four years we started separate Hanifa Suleman Dawood Oncology Centre. In this centre we provide latest treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and brachytherapy to our patients, which is free of cost. Only last year we provided treatment to 1,195 patients suffering from various malignancies. Now with development of science, cancer could be treated and prevented. He said poor socioeconomic conditions, malnutrition, cigarette, smoking paan, chaalia, Gutka, childhood marriage and multiple pregnancies are common causes of malignancy in our population.
Medical oncologist of SIUT Dr. Najeeb Naimatullah said 40per cent of patient suffering from cancer could be prevented with early diagnosis and treatment. He said in 2010 over 7 million people died of cancer in the world. Every year this number is increasing. He said cancer screening is very important before symptoms appear.
Dr. Mutahir Tunio radiation oncologist of SIUT discussed the risk factors for cancer. He said more than 60-70per cent of deaths are because of heart and cancer diseases. Both are caused by tobacco smoking. Major causes of cancer are smoking, paan, Chaalia, Gukta, pollution and obesity. He said sensible choice of food and quitting smoking can prevent cancer.
Dr. Asad Shahzad of SIUT said blood in urine is red flag sign; one must seek help of urologist or a general surgeon immediately. Factors responsible for cancer are smoking, dye, rubber and petroleum products. Urinary bladder cancer is the second most common cancer of genitourinary tract. Kidney cancer accounts 3per cent of all adult cancer. Prostate cancer is most common cause. It accounts 32per cent of all the cancers. Testicular tumour accounts 0.2per cent in USA. It presents as painless enlargement of testis. APP
