Indian, Pakistani MPs agree to enhance regional cooperation
ISLAMABAD:
Indian and Pakistani parliamentarians on Wednesday agreed to work for ensuring
the peace process and enhancing greater regional cooperation.
Regional peace and cooperation was discussed during a meeting between the
members of Women Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) and visiting Indian parliamentarians,
here at WPC Secretariat.
Ten-member Indian delegation headed by Speaker of Lok Sabah, Smt. Meira Kumar,
also visited the WPC secretariat, followed by the meeting with the members
of Women's Parliamentary Caucus.
The aim of the meeting was to provide greater opportunities of interaction
between women parliamentarians of both countries and exchanged experiences,
expertise and good practices and advocate women empowerment.
Speaker, Smt. Meira Kumar appreciated efforts of the WPC and its role in building
consensus amongst all the stakeholders in legislation concerning the women.
She was of the view that women of Pakistan and India have similar issues but
over the past few years there has been a "silent revolution" where
more women have been educated to empowers them and ensure better rights and
opportunities.
Dr. Nafisa Shah, Secretary WPC stated that women of both the countries should
act as agents of change and play their role in transforming the dialogue process
into reality.
Trade and Visa opportunities for women of both the countries were the major
points of discussion as a way forward. It was also agreed that exchange programs
of parliamentarians, students, women entrepreneurs and researchers should
be promoted to boost economic and social ties between both the countries.
